Learning French might seem challenging to many students due to the sheer number of words, grammar structures, and exceptions. However, can one study those parts of French language which will be of greatest use in everyday life?

The answer is affirmative due to the 80/20 rule in French.

According to the Pareto Principle or 80/20 rule, around 80% of results are achieved thanks to only 20% of efforts. When it comes to mastering French language, it implies that the learner needs to focus on those aspects of language which are the most likely to appear in a conversation.

What Is 80/20 Rule in French?

The 80/20 principle in French is an approach that encourages learners to concentrate on the areas of the language that will be helpful to them as opposed to trying to learn everything evenly.

For example, when you master the 1,000 to 2,000 words that are frequently used in French, you will be able to comprehend a lot of things about French in day-to-day activities. The same applies to mastering the commonly used sentence structure and verbs. This does not imply that you ignore the other 80% of the language. You only begin with the 20%.

What Does 80/20 Principle Mean in Terms of Learning French?

The principle is really simple:

Focus on working on commonly used and valuable parts of French language initially. Do not spend much time learning uncommon words, but instead spend it on learning words that will be encountered frequently by you, regardless of the context be it conversation, books, movies, or everyday life.

For example:

Common greetings/salutations
Common verbs
Common nouns/adjectives
Common question words
Common prepositions
Conversational expressions
Common sentence structure
Common vocabulary

Among the hard things during learning French is its grammar. Nevertheless, it does not imply that everything should be studied about the grammar before talking. The 80 20 rule concerning French grammar will give an understanding of what grammatical elements are most used.

Start with:

Subject Pronouns

Begin by familiarizing yourself with the main French subject pronouns:

Je — I
Tu — You (informal)
Il / Elle — He / She
Nous — We
Vous — You (formal or plural)
Ils / Elles — They

Essential French Verbs

Learn these commonly used verbs, as they are important for forming everyday French sentences:

Être — To be
Avoir — To have
Faire — To do / To make
Aller — To go
Vouloir — To want
Pouvoir — To be able to / Can

Basic French Tenses

You don’t need to master every French tense at the beginning. Start by focusing on the most commonly used ones:

Present tense — for actions happening now or regular activities
Passé composé — for completed actions in the past
Near future — formed with aller + infinitive
Basic imperfect tense — for past habits, descriptions, and ongoing situations

Once you have a good understanding of these tenses, you can gradually progress to more advanced French grammar.

French Sentence Structure

Start by learning how to create simple sentences using this basic pattern:

Subject + Verb + Object

For example:

Je parle français.
I speak French.

J’aime le café.
I like coffee.

Understanding common sentence patterns will help you build sentences more naturally and communicate with greater confidence.

The 80/20 Rule for French Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of the easiest areas where you can apply the 80/20 rule effectively. Rather than trying to memorize hundreds of random French words, focus on vocabulary that is relevant to your daily life, learning needs, and common situations.

Here are some useful categories to start with:

Daily Life: maison, travail, école, voiture, nourriture
People: ami, famille, homme, femme, enfant
Common Activities: aller, venir, manger, boire, parler, travailler
Useful Adjectives: bon, mauvais, grand, petit, nouveau, important

The vocabulary you learn should also match your specific goals. For example, someone preparing for a French language exam will need different vocabulary from someone learning French mainly for travel and everyday conversations. Focus on words that you are most likely to use, and your learning will become more practical and efficient.
